General Information

Oldies are Goldies. The CARF MiG-15 is a museum-scale model jet. The authentic outline, detailed surface structure, and finish make the plane unreachable. Due to its impressive size, the CARF MiG-15’s flying characteristics are unreachable. We don’t believe there is any other “Golden Age” jet on the market with this kind of scale in the air. The best thing is that this plane can be flown with any 22 lb (100 N) thrust turbine and you will not feel the need for more. Still, you will fly half throttle most of the time.

The greatest example of Golden Age jet aviation history.

Over time, the 10-year-old kit has developed some shortcomings, which caused us to think about a complete refurbishment into today’s CARF standards. Increased prefabrication and design changes to the turbine position, main fuselage hatch, and landing gear mount make it a much better kit overall, reflecting CARF’s level of quality and perfection.

ARF KIT Features

The CARF-Models MiG-15 has been significantly upgraded over the original version in the following areas:

  • The old one-piece hatch has been replaced with a 3-part hatch, one of which is permanently glued in place. This increases strength and accessibility to the built-in equipment.
  • The canopy has been separated from the front of the hatch, making cockpit installation easier and a sliding canopy an option.
  • The turbine has been moved forward by a considerable 30 cm (12"). This guarantees that no balance lead is required to obtain the correct CG. The plane becomes lighter and will be guaranteed to be below the 13.5 kg limit set by the Jet World Masters regulation.
  • The two long glass rods have been replaced with two carbon-reinforced ring-formers. These hold the pre-installed sockets for the new, short carbon rods, making the wing less flexible at almost no weight gain.
  • Due to the new turbine position, the thrust tube is extended. For easy installation, the large intake duct is split into two pieces. The front half is already installed in the fuselage, along with the air intake lip, which is glued to it, leaving the builder with no further work to do.
  • The nose gear formers are factory-glued into the fuselage, using the readily installed intake duct as a strong support
  • The tail, which is made in a very complex 4-piece mold, is installed, aligned, and secured to the fin, leaving no additional work to the builder.
  • The wings have received a reinforced gear mount structure
  • The instruction manual is all new (and already completed on day one of the sales launch), reflecting all the new features of the kit
  • The new CARF-made Kevlar fuel tank fits between the main formers and holds almost 3.5 l of fuel (to be purchased separately

Fuselage

Most modifications have been made to the fuselage. The new fuselage features a modified engine position and load-carrying formers. The front part of the 2-part duct is already glued in, holding the nose gear formers readily in place. The 4-part hatch allows much more convenient access to the equipment inside. A sliding canopy is now also very easy to accomplish. The thrust tube is adjusted in length for the new engine position.

Wings

The wings are large and light, with well-reinforced gear mounting boards installed at the correct angle. Gear doors come as separate parts, and the skin-hinged flaps are pre-cut. The two long rods across the fuselage are gone; they‘re replaced by 4 short studs instead.

Stab

The removable one-piece stab is made in a very complex mold and has the top part of the rudder fin molded, too. 2 mini servos will be built into the stab for elevator control; the top part of the rudder is fixed.
For flaps, speed brake doors, and gear doors, the kit includes a scale accessory to make them look impressive.

Engine Choice

A great thing is that this plane can be flown with 100 N thrust turbines, and you will not feel the need for more. Still, you will fly half throttle most of the time. With a 120N engine, it becomes a rocket ship. It's a perfect bed for one of those older engines sitting around, which are a bit larger and heavier for their thrust level, and which you would not want to install in a modern performance jet.

Retract Landing Gear

The landing gear of the MIG-15 is a beautiful replica of the full-size gear, recently upgraded to Electron ER-40 units. A MiG gear is never as simple a design as one would think; the required installation angles pose a huge challenge on a regular electron gear unit, which has been resolved by combining it with our very own scale struts. Regularly check the wheels and brakes to ensure proper ground handling.

Accessories

For our MiG-15 Fagot, we offer a wide range of accessories. These include the electric retractable landing gear, fuel tanks, scale cockpit, lighting set, thrust tube, and an optional UAT. In addition, we offer high-quality MacGregor servos in combination with our very own CARF-Models servo arms – perfectly matched to the model and the demands of a high-performance scale jet.

Flying Characteristics

The CARF Models MiG-15 offers stable, clean tracking and flies very true to its full-scale counterpart. It handles smooth, large-scale aerobatics with ease, thanks to its swept wing and balanced design. The MiG requires rudder input, especially in turns and crosswind approaches, due to its large side area. Overall, it's a beautifully flying scale jet warbird that rewards precise, realistic flying and feels impressively solid in the air.
