General Information

Form Follows Function! The CARF-Models Mephisto is an innovative new aerobatic sport jet. We had to combine great classic aerobatic capabilities with unbeatable 3D performance. We met that diabolical challenge when we introduced the first Mephisto to the jet modeling world. But after working for two flying seasons with the best pilots out there, we incorporated everything we learned into a new version of this best-ever sport jet. Mephisto V2!

When it was first presented many years ago, the Mephisto was deemed a 'controversial' design. True. The looks were very special. One thing was obvious: Form followed function. That's what ruled the design philosophy. Of course, it was supposed to do the very special things we envisioned; it couldn't be mainstream.

ARF KIT Details

For CARF, this new large Sport Jet needed a 3-piece wing. How easy would transportation and field assembly be if the center wing, containing all landing gear, could permanently remain on the front fuselage, creating one easy-to-transport unit with the gear retracted or extended? It would fit in any small station wagon and handle so easily. The challenge comes with the flaps, as they would have to be too far outwards or be two-part surfaces on each side. Not so with the Mephisto, which has a completely removable flap that interlocks with the servo control arm and a solid outer bearing. When you slide the outer wing onto the carbon wing tube studs, the huge one-piece flaps integrate and automatically hook up on both sides. That has not changed.

Features

  • The fuselage has been the Mephisto's most innovative component from day one. It's a 3-part design, with the front part split along the center and the top half featuring a completely removable hatch.
  • However, for considerable weight savings, we have omitted the nose gear doors and increased the openings in the front fuselage as much as we could
  • We changed the rear fuselage mounting method on the bottom side for much more strength.
  • We incorporated a new fuel tank mount for a single fuel tank and changed the rear end so the new, much more powerful vector thrust tube would fit without any modifications.
  • But the ailerons are 20 mm deeper. Not necessarily for slower-speed authority, but for higher roll rates for all these rifle rolls you seem to love, without having to utilize the taileron function at high speeds.
  • The center wing skin was removed wherever it was not visible. That not only saves weight but also creates space for soft bag tanks if someone would like to save even more weight, as these would eliminate any header tank.
  • The main gear doors were also eliminated, reducing complexity and saving quite some more weight. The aileron servos mount in the wing rib, not on the hatch, to ensure that the servo torque at high speeds and high roll rates won't crack the servo off the hatch.
  • Because the plane can break into so many small pieces, and all can be protected with a wonderful set of REVOC protection bags (available as an accessory), it will fit even into a small station wagon, along with the transmitter case, toolbox, and a big can of fuel...

  • The tail feathers had been upgraded even during the life cycle of the V1 Mephisto, and the V2 still boasts fully balanced tailerons, a highly reinforced stab tube, a set of turbulators at the leading-edge root, and the full trailing edge of the flying stab. Eliminating ANY remaining risk of flutter even at the highest speeds, and generating some very nice whistling sound, which has become characteristic of the Mephisto. The fin and rudder might be the only parts that haven't been upgraded...

Engine Choice & Fuel Tank

Most pilots have equipped the Mephisto with the new KingTech 320 turbine. This engine has blown us all away, literally, with its power and reliability. The slightly higher weight may be the reason for its performance and reliability, and it's more than enough reason to make all the little changes in the Mephisto V2 to reduce weight wherever possible. The big engine is still flown at pretty low power settings throughout the flight, except during the power-consuming 3D hover sequences, but overall, a 5-liter fuel tank has proven sufficient. A set of soft bag tanks will be offered very soon, bespoke-made for our Mephisto V2, eliminating even the 300+ grams of a header tank. However, the previous dual fuel tank with 6 Liter or even 7.2 Liter capacity can still be used; the mounts are therefore no longer glued in but are included in the kit.

Thrust Vector Tube

The Vector thrust tube has been upgraded. The vector is now mounted to the rear former in the fuselage, which eliminates any trim change due to thermal expansion from temperature variations. The vector diameter is larger than the thrust tube diameter, reducing vector thrust loss to almost zero, as there is no restriction when not deflected. The thrust tube itself is designed to withstand the high thrust of big-block engines, with spiral reinforcement over its entire length. We moved away from the bell mouth and designed an aerodynamically well-working intake lip instead, which creates more laminar airflow in the thrust tube, making it run much cooler. That is also important since, for weight-saving reasons, it is only a single-layer tube. (Please note: The fuel tank and vector tube are not included in the kit and must be purchased separately).

Landing Gear

The retract setup is unique because all 3 gear legs retract forward. The very special feature is that, when retracted, the gear still leaves 1/3 of the wheel exposed, and the front fuselage/center wing assembly sits on its wheels even with the gear retracted. This not only makes handling, storage, and transport of this main component easier, but also lets the plane land with retracted landing gear (e.g., due to a malfunction) without causing a scratch. Who knows what it could be good for when flying in 3D-mode low to the ground... The MMephisto'selectric retracts are built by ELECTRON especially for this airplane and come with the popular GS-200 controller. The V2 still utilizes this very gear, and nothing has changed, except that the gear doors have been eliminated!

Flying Characteristics

Only the pilot limits what the Mephisto can do. Fast and precise aerobatics are as possible as slow 3D stuff. A few "immicks "such as a T-canard borrowed from the serious F3A pattern ships, as well as a long horizontal strake in front of the stab, make the plane track in any attitude, upright, inverted, or in knife-edge, slow and fast, like never seen before. The 3D vector tube allows all kinds of harriers, hovers, show rolls, waterfalls, and so on, which until now could only be performed with lightweight aerobatic planes or with especially designed 3D Delta Jets - the Mephisto features the best of both worlds. Pattern precision and 3D extreme. So many World-Class Pilots have put their hands on one, and every single one has had nothing but compliments about what an extraordinary flying machine Mephisto really is...
